TexasSure, implemented in Texas on October 1, 2008, is a vehicle insurance identification system designed, in effect, to reduce the number of uninsured vehicles in Texas. With this system, law enforcement vehicles can enter a license plate number into the enforcement vehicle’s computer system to see if the vehicle is insured. This means that, while a police car is behind you, the law enforcement official can run your license plate to see if you have valid auto insurance. The permitted users of the program include local police, sheriffs, the DPS, and vehicle registration offices.
The benefit to a law-abiding citizen, however, is that it is helping reduce the number of uninsured vehicles on the road. On average, each year Texan drivers who follow the law and purchase auto insurance pay about $1 million in higher costs in insurance premiums in order to protect themselves from uninsured drivers. Additionally, it is estimated that 20 percent of drivers in Texas are uninsured. This means that if you are in an accident and it is not your fault but the driver has no insurance, you will receive no coverage for damages done to your vehicle. Although the program initially saw an outlay of $7 million to implement which was funded by a $1 fee drivers had to pay when they applied for or renewed their vehicle registration, the program is expected to reduce the number of uninsured drivers which will thereby result in lower auto insurance premiums and better protection for you as a driver.
